Snoring

Coach Villarreal and I will not be rooming together at state this year. I have never heard anything like I did last night. It was loud! I eventually had to get up and put toilet paper in my ears and then sleep with my head between two pillows. Doing that just brought the volume to a normal snoring level. It was amazing. I was frustrated and astounded at the same time. He seems chipper and well rested this morning...good for him....jerk.
I am looking forward to day 2. Should be a good day, but there are some very tough teams. Looks like it will be a dog fight between Crystal Lake Central and Sycamore for the title. They both are solid teams. I think if we can finish in the top 8-12 I will be pleased. We have 3 still in the championship bracket so that guarantees us 3 place winners. I'm just hoping we end up with odd finishes instead of even. I wont be able to update till tomorrow, but hopefully brackets will be online at www.illinoismatmen.com by the end of the day.

Day one in my opinion was a success. 11 Wrestlers through to day two is a good deal. I love the 2 day tournaments but forget that I don't have anyone to take stats so I have to do them myself. Lincoln Tournament

We've been off for about a week now, and the guys are ready to get back on the mats. We are heading down to Lincoln Community High School here in just a few minutes to compete against 23 other teams in the 2 day tournament. Last year I thought we held our own for being a smaller school in the mostly 2 and 3 A team tournament with a 13th place finish. I am hoping to improve that with a top 8 finish. Finishing in the top 1/3 would be great for our kids and the program. We will have to wrestle tough, and better on day two than we did at the Reaper.
JV has had some really great opportunities to get some experience. Last Thursday they went down to Wilmington to wrestle in a dual tournament. Although they had a final record of 1-3, they all got some much needed mat time and saw some really good programs in St. Rita, Joliet West and Niles Notre Dame. The victory was over Manteno and came down to the last match to decide the outcome. Jose Aguilar was able to pull of a great win to give the JV their first win of the day.
The JV traveled to Sandwich yesterday for their JV invite. We had some weight issues, which is becoming all too common at the JV level, that depleted our line up a little bit but we were able to come away with two place winners, Arian Herrera took first place at 285 and Zach Peruski ended up a runner up at 189.

Like I said, weight is becomming an issue. There are only 2 or three kids in single digits for body fat, so there is room to loose safely for all of our guys. If a wrestler commits to making a weight he needs to make it...end of story. He is letting down his team if he does not, and that, to me, is completely unacceptable. One more month of wrestling before the state series to figure it out.

I will try and get on tonight to post results from today's first round at Lincoln. I hope that everyone had a great Christmas. I know I did.

Monday the 20th

Practice will be at 1:00pm on Monday the 20th. We will be done around 3:15pm or so. We need to make sure that our grades are good and that we are taking care of our finals. We had 11 kids missing from practice today for a multitude of reasons. We need to make sure that we are holding each other accountable and informing the coaches when you are not there.

I look forward to next week with Genoa Kingston and the Wilmington JV dual tourney. It should be a good opportunity for our younger guys to get in a few more matches.

Thanks to all my guys for being so good to my boy when he comes in the room. He talks about you all the time. "Are we gonna see your wrestling friends today?" "I know your wrestling friend named Travis." He cracks me up. I really appreciate how you are all so good with him...THANK YOU!!

9-0 With 2 Duals still Remaining this Month

Your Reapers improved to 9-0 last night with wins over Hampshire and Aurora East. Last year we had 11 wins total and we are already up to 9 with over a month left of the dual season. It is a fun experience. Some one asked me why I think we are having such a great start and it was really an easy question for me to answer. We have great kids. Good character kids and they are all work very hard. Having a full line up has been very helpful as well. I have to say that we have outstanding coaches to top it all off. I am blessed to have a staff that loves to work with kids and knows how to reach them. Having an All-American collegiate wrestler in the room with Jose Villarreal has been amazing the past few years. His knowledge of the sport and ability to break down the technique so all of our wrestlers can learn it, is extremely valuable. Coach Joe Kampf has been a fine addition to the staff. He brings a high level of enthusiasm and has a good knowledge base as well. He loves the firemen's series. Dirk Summers loves to work out and has been a big part in the fact that we are very well conditioned. We are also happy to have Robert Hernandez drop in from time to time when he is not putting bad guys behind bars. I hope that we can sustain this momentum over break and continue to put a quality product out on the mat. I think the best is yet to come from the Reaper Wrestlers. Come out and see the excitement.

Big Meet Tonight

They boys have been wrestling very well so far and we are hoping to continue the trend tonight against two teams that we have had problems with in the past. Aurora East and Hampshire are coming to town and I feel very strongly that we can add 2 to our win total. It will be no easy task however and we will have to wrestle very fundamentally sound in order to accomplish this task. East always has a tough lineup filled with hard nosed kids that will fight for every point. I admire the fact that they wrestle with so much pride and heart. They will be very tough to beat. Hampshire is still a relatively new program, but their numbers are constantly improving and they are a bigger school wrestling bigger competition which in this sport is a big deal. If we wrestle fundamentally sound; solid stances, quality technique, good positioning for 6 FULL minutes, things will work out for the best. Come out and see what we are putting out on the mat. Wrestling starts at 5:30pm. We won't be home again until the middle of January so this will be your best chance to see the HOTTEST TEAM IN PLANO!!!!
7-0 feels really good...9-0 will feel better.

Lisle and Coal City Tonight

Should be two good match ups tonight. We lost pretty handedly last year when 4 of our wrestlers decided to not make weight. It was ugly. Hopefully tonight we can avenge those losses. We haven't beaten Lisle since the 2006-07 season so it would be very nice to get a win against a perennial quality program. The boys are working hard and really starting to grasp the importance of drilling technique. It is a hard transition for some. In lower level wrestling sometimes a wrestler can be successful just because of their athleticism. This is not usually the case in high school. I think that where ever a kid comes from (club or middle school program) there is a learning curve to high school wrestling. We are extremely young so we have a bit more learning to do that I'd like, but the nice thing is, is that we are very quick learners.
Come out and see us tonight at Lisle if the weather isn't bad. It would be nice to see a purple crowed as we try to improve to 7-0.

Reaper Results

There are a few more weight classes left to wrestle, but I thought I'd get in a quick update since our guys are done. We had 7 make it to the final round and we went 4-3 in the finals.
Shaun Wollenweber 2nd @103
Abel Gonzalez 5th @112
Jose Villarreal 2nd @ 119
Koty Bennett 4th @ 125
Travis Tomac 1st @140
Nick Leibundguth 5th @ 145
Wes Brown 3rd @ 152

Overall I think we wrestled pretty well. We will need to get some more wins/points out of our upper weights if we want to compete for a regional title. Nice thing about that is we have plenty of time to do it. We saw some very good things out of our young boys and I am extremely pleased with our conditioning. It looks like we have a great shot to take third place. Sure it was disappointing not to bring home the big one, and thats what happens when you go 2 for 6 in the first round of the wrestle backs. I think the competition was pretty good this year. Sterling Newman brought a lot of quality guys as well did Gibson City. The Wilmington and Reed Custer crowed was missed as our stands looked a bit bare. Hopefully we can bring in some more teams next year with full lineups and who travel well. Back to the grind on Monday as we prepare for 4 duals next week. Hopefully we can avenge some losses from last year as we see Coal City, Lisle, Aurora East and Hampshire. We are at home for the last time until January 11th on Thursday so be sure to come check out the  hottest sports team in Plano.

2 Left in Wrestle Backs

Abel Gonzalez at 112 and Ryan Smith at 215 are the only two left out of our wrestlers in wrestle backs. 6 left in the semi's.

6 in the Semi's and 12 total still alive.

We have 6 outstanding wrestlers in the semi-final round this morning and 12 out of our 14 are still alive.

1000+ Hits!!!

Over 1000 hits on the blog in just over a month. Unbelieveable. I'm excited that you are all taking interest in our program and sport. It means a lot to the kids.
Tonight is the day 1 of the Reaper Classic. Over the years the Reaper Classic has been one of the premiere single A tournaments in the state. Each years dozens of state qualifiers and place winners come out of the Classic which is something we are very proud of. This year we have had a few state powerhouse teams leave the tournament because they are entering in a super dual at the U of I. I am sad to see them leave but am still confident that the 16 teams that are coming will put out a quality product. Come out one or both of the nights to see your Reapers put out a full lineup and compete for a title.

Here are the results from last night. We had a great night and the kids are looking better every time they step on the mat. This is a good thing because we are in a meat grinder of a regional and will need to peek in February. I want to recognize and thank Mr. Joel Longshore for being the new voice of Reaper Wrestling. Joel has graciously volunteered his time and accepted the role of our wrestling announcer. We are very pleased and excited to have him in the family.

Reaper Wrestlers Improve to 5-0

The Reapers improved to a perfect 5-0 after the dismantling of conference foe Herscher high school by the score of 52-18 and the Clippers of Amboy by the score of 60-15. Official results will be posted in the morning...it's late man and I'm tired. Next competition is on this Friday/Saturday at the Reaper Classic. Thanks to all that came out. Our crowd seems to get bigger every time we set foot on the mat.

2009 Russian Nationals wrestling Highlights

adidas Wrestling - More Than A Sport

Mixed feelings today.

I should be excited about our match tonight against Herscher and Amboy, but instead I am pretty disappointed in some occurrences that have taken place here at PHS. We have recently had a string of thefts and vandalism in the locker rooms. At least 4 members of the wrestling team have had money taken from their lockers and two members have had both their school and personal property vandalized. Yesterday I realized that my brand new iPod that I bring into the room for practice had been taken out of the room. This is beyond frustrating and I can only hope that it wasn't any of our guys that were involved in any of these acts. I am disappointed in our school and hope that we can find the ones responsible.
It is hard to focus on wrestling with this crap going on, but we will do our best tonight. Conference schedule opens at 5:30pm with Herscher High School. Come out and support us.

WHOOOO HOOOOO!!!!! Reapers Crush Cougars!!!!

It was a great morning for the Wrestling Reapers as they crushed the Cougars of Plainfield South High School 49-24. Our boys wrestled very well and left it all out on the mats. Personally this was a huge victory for me because I started my coaching career at Plainfield South 9 years ago when I was student teaching. It felt great to go back and beat up on a team that passed me over for a job. I'll have official results posted later on today. Off the top of my head, we had wins from; Abel Gonzalez (112), Jose Villarreal (119), Koty Bennett (124), Travis Tomac (140), Kelby Gann (160), Jose Loeza (171), Pickett (189), Ryan Smith (215) and Arrian Herrara (285).

Outstanding performance by all. We open up the conference schedule on Wednesday against Herscher. Come out as the Wrestlin Reapers try to improve to 5-0 as we take on the Clippers from Amboy as well. Action starts at 5:30pm.

Nutrition Tips for Wrestlers

BASIC NUTRITION RULES EVERY WRESTLER SHOULD KNOW
1. Eat every 2-3 hours. These meals should contain complete protein, vegetables and fruit.
2. Have carbohydrates in the morning (oats, whole wheat, etc) and during (simple carbohydrates: dextrose and maldextrin) and after exercise only (with complete protein). Ingest a complete protein, vegetable/fruit, complex carbohydrate meal one hour later. These carbohydrates are rich in fibre which will help you feel full longer.
3. Take greens plus/V8 as a vegetable supplement if you can't prepare vegetables during the day.
4. 25-35% of your diet should be good fats. These include extra virgin olive oil, salmon/fish oil, or other monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Try supplementing with flaxmeal or high DHA/EPA fish oil daily.
5. Only drink water, dark teas and coffee ( teas and coffees are good for you only in Moderation and only black if you want to drink it. A cup of coffee or tea after a workout is good for your metabolism, No more than one. Sport energy drinks are not the best for your diet. Although some contain healthy levels of salt and potassium, they are difficult for you body to digest. If you have to drink sport drinks like gaterade, etc than be sure to dilute it with 50/50 water. STAY AWAY FROM REDBULL AND ALL OF THOSE OTHER GARBAGE ENERGY DRINKS!!!! PERIOD!!
6. Plan out your meals every Sunday. It will help keep you on the right track for success. Try and pack meals for the work/school week on this day in containers that are easy to bring with you. This will mean a little of extra time spent preparing, but worth it in the long run. Once you develop a routine, it will be second nature to you and easy
7. Stay away from any food or supplement vitamin that states that they are the best for quick results. The best supplement for you body for energy is in the outside isle of the supermarket. AND THEY ARE NOT BRAGGING ABOUT IT!!!
8. Some vitamins are good for you. Vitamin C and Iron pills are great. A regular One a day Vitamin are also good for you. Expensive protein powders, Creatine powders and all of the others that cost a tonne of money are a waist.

Additions to the schedule and a help request.

We added two meets to the schedule recently. This Saturday the 4th of December we will wrestle the Cougars of Plainfield South High School. Action starts at 10:00am. We are excited to wrestle against a big 3A school and personally I am excited because I started my coaching career their in 2002-03.
The second addition will be a JV dual tournament held at Wilmington High School on December 23. Specific time is uncertain yet, but I will get it out ASAP.

We are looking for ticket takers for the Reaper Classic on December 10 and 11. As compensation we will give you free admission to the tournament. We are always in need of volunteers as concession workers as well. Please contact Teri Haws or Jim Schmidt if you are interested in helping. All help is greatly appreciated.

Reapers Start 2-0. Outstanding First Night on the Mats.

Mendota and Elgin St. Eds came into town yesterday to face a hungry and eager Reaper Wrestling squad. They each left with a L in the win/loss column thanks to your Plano Graplers.

Two Practices Left

We open at home on Wednesday the 1st of December and I can't wait to get this show started. It's been a good 3 weeks of intense training and the boys are ready to let loose. We will have a full line up for the first time in a very long time. That is of course if every makes weight. I am a bit concerned that some of our guys think that weight cutting only occurs in the room. This is not the case. I've never been a huge believer in cutting a drastic amount of weight, but if you are with in 2-3 lbs of a lower weight class and have 10-15% body fat, it would be in the wrestlers and teams best interest in more times than not to drop the weight. Eating right is the biggest contributor to proper weight loss. Smaller portions and a bit of sacrifice with pop and the sweats will make a huge difference. I am hoping that we can get our guys to buy into that truth.
Come out and support us on Wednesday. The guys and I are excited for the product we hope to put out there this year. This Saturday we are traveling to near by Plainfield South to take on a big 3A team that I think we will compete with very well. Already spoke with their coach who says that they will not have a full lineup. Looking forward to a good first week of wrestling before the Classic next weekend. Thanks to those that have and continue to support the sport that put Plano on the map.

Week from Wednesday

Short but busy week. We need to get weight certified, pass out uniforms, get team pictures and have wrestle offs. Basic offensive package is installed but we still have some fine tuning to do. Kids are in good spirits still and continuing to work hard. They set the bar high the first week so I am holding them to that standard. December 1, we take on Mendota and Elgin St. Edwards. Should be a good time. I am looking forward to see what we can do with a full line up.

9 Practices Left

Only 9 practices remain before our first meet. We still have a lot to cover but I think that we will be ready. We will conduct our weight certification tests on Monday and Tuesday so that the boys can have a good Thanksgiving. We had a bit of a lighter practice yesterday so that kids could get home and get some homework done. It seems that grade issues are trying to make their way back into the program. I am hoping to cut them off before they become a serious issue.

Turks - Drill

Hard Core Club

I was very impressed that at the very end of doubles, a wrestler came up to me and stated that he wanted to continue to have morning practices 2-3 times a week. Little Jose took a huge jump in leadership when he guaranteed that he would have guys commited to coming in the morning for some extra work. I am please to say that so far he has kept his word and came in on Monday and Wednesday with 5 other young men who are all dedicated to make our program better. That is just one more reason to be excited for this year.
************************************************************************************ In other news we have some kids that are getting pretty sick. We  need to take care of ourselves in this time of increased workouts and continued fluctuation in our crazy Illinois weather. Washing your hands constantly and taking a shower after practice is a must. Leaving practice with a coat on is also essential. Increase your vitamin C intake and get plenty of rest. Fruits and veggies should be eaten with every meal. Stay healthy!!!

Breakfast and Frisbee

Since I took over this program we have been running double practices for the first week. At the end of the week as a tradition we play and little game of ultimate Frisbee to break up the monotony of our reqular practices. This year we started a new tradition of have a team breakfast after the game to give a bit of reward to the guys for making it through such a tough week. One more practice tonight and a bit of a shorter one tomorrow morning and "Hell Week" comes to an end. Kids have worked very hard and I can't say it enough on how good of a group of kids they are.

Nutrition tip...EAT BREAKFAST every day. Keep that metabolism going through out the day. You need fuel to run a car, you need calories to run your body.

Mat Reapers Give Back

The Reaper Wrestlers took a little time off from training this morning to give back to PHS by picking up over 15 bags worth of trash from the school grounds. It is important that our wrestlers not only take pride in the wrestling program but in their school as well. Doing a bit of community service builds character which is always a goal of our program. We strive to make sure that our boys are better men after they leave the program. I think we took a step in the right direction with this act.

Cael Sanderson Wrestling Technique

Jake Herbert Wrestling Technique - Leg Finishes

Hump day

There is light at the end of the tunnel. We are half way done with Hell Week. Had a great practice last night. These kids work hard and I am thankful for that. This morning we had a bit of a hick-up trying to do something new in the weight room, but we'll make up for it this evening. We are getting a few more kids trickling in that are deciding to be a part of something positive and good so that is good as well. Tonight we will go over some more finishes from the single leg and high crotch and then throw in some snap downs and the front head series.

ASU Insane Plate Workout | Arizona State Hell Week on Flowrestling

ASU Insane Plate Workout | Arizona State Hell Week on Flowrestling

4 Corners

Another good morning practice. We had 4 stations each having its own set of exercises. One station was doing a plate work out, another worked with medicine balls, the third was a jump rope station and the final station was doing things like push ups, sit ups and mountain climbers. The boys worked hard and got in a good sweat. I can't say it enough on how excited I am for this group of young men. They will all contribute to the success of our program. They are all a necessary part of our team. I'm hoping to recruit a few more in the hallways to get our numbers up around 35-38. That will give us a little more depth and create a some more competition at certain weights.

Great First Day!!

We had a wonderful first day. The excitement and enthusiasm gave me goose bumps. I am very pleased with the group of kids that have come out. The athleticism already has floored me. I look forward to watching them grow through out the season. So far it does not look like they are afraid of hard work. I hope this trend continues.
In terms of leadership, I feel that there are two kids that stand out in my mind at this point and I am hoping that at least two more will emerge. Leadership is a funny thing. There are multiple styles and ways to lead but I am looking for someone that will not only be vocal and lead by example but will also be positive and encouraging. I am looking for someone that will not only lead in the wrestling room, but also in the classroom and community. Leadership is not a sometime thing, it's an all the time thing. Who will step up? I look forward to finding out. Get rest gentlemen. Ice those sore legs, drink some fluids, eat a good carb filled meal and get the homework done. Day 2 is a few short hours away.

Clinic

Coach Kampf, Coach Summers and I went to Montini High School to a coaches clinic ran by Izzy Martinez. He sure knows his stuff. We learned a lot and have it all on video. I will try and post some highlights one here, but if you are interested in a copy of the entire video, let me know and I'll burn a copy. Can't wait till this afternoon.

First AM Practice Under Our Belts

30 young men showed up this morning ready to work and start a new Reaper Wrestling season. I was very impressed with their attitudes and work ethic already. There were a couple of kids that did not show who I am expecting to come out tonight. Overall I am happy so far and look forward to this afternoons practice. I believe very strongly that this is a special group of kids who will help take this program to another level. Go Reapers!

Clinic tomorrow...practice on Monday.

Some of the coaches and I are going to a coaching clinic tomorrow at Montini high school. Should be fun. Always good to try and learn new techniques. I think back to my first year and how green I was. Coach Z at Airfield gave me a solid block of wrestling Passion but I was a bit lack in the technique part of the sport. I've been fortunate to be able to whitness some great clinicians and coach along some very knowledgeable coaches. There will always be room for improvement, but I think we have the program on the right track. I can't wait till Monday!

First Practice

First practice is Monday the 8th at 6:15am. I look forward to the beginning of a great new season. Come ready to work men.

Two good technique video's.

Here are two good video's on the "high crotch". The first is a high crotch to a dump. Very effective and low risk. The second is bit of a risky counter to the "high crotch". It is very nice for freestyle but can be useful in folkstyle as well. Enjoy.
