Beggining of the End

Tomorrow is a big day for the Reaper Wrestlers. Tomorrow sets the tone for the off season for our JV kids. If we want to continue the success we had today, it is necessary to wrestle in the off season. I have nothing against participating in other sports and in fact I support it. But wrestling a on a weekend once or twice a month will not hurt anyone and will strengthen our program. I spoke to the kids about Wilmington's program today. I've spoken with their coaches and tried to pick their brains as much as I could, and the only difference I see in them is experience. Their coaching staff is good, but I don't think better than ours. They have a smaller school population and their kids don't have super powers, but what they do have is experience. I asked Coach Murphy once how many matches his guys get in the off season. His response floored me. He told me that on average EVERY guy gets about 35-40 matches in during the off season. They still play baseball and run track, and their football team is in the playoffs every year as well. If we want to get to the next level, the level where Wilimington is, we have to wrestle more matches...period.

Tomorrow is big for our varsity guys as well. Tomorrow will determine a lot of seeds for the regional tournament next week, which will have implications for sectionals and consequently the state tournament. We need to wrestle well and beat guys we haven't before and make sure we take care of the guys we already have beaten. We can't regress. Tomorrow shows who worked harder this season, us or them. I'd like to think that I have the hardest working group of kids in the conference. We'll have to see if I'm right tomorrow. Get some rest men, we go to work early in the AM.

Shoe Sale

I know it's the end of the season, but here is a website that is having some outstanding deals on some very good wrestling shoes. You can save then till next year if your foot is done growing.

The Kids are Hungry

We've had a few good practices now and are ready for the weekend. This is the first time in a few weeks where we have had any time off. It is good to get some technique things taken care of and a few guys can heal up some bumps and bruises, but it feels strange not to be competing this week. It will be nice to get back on the mats on Saturday. I have high expectations for the weekend. I think that if we have a good showing, it will propel us through the next couple of weeks during the state series. I think we have a good chance of getting multiple guys through to the big dance in Champaign. The need to peek and it wont be easy but they know that and are willing to do what it takes.

Good night

I thought our guys wrestled well last night. We caught a few breaks against Wilmington that kept the score close but I figure it's about time we've caught some of those good breaks. We've been on the wrong end of them for the last few years and I don't mind collecting now and then. We gave up two forfeits and still were with in 11 points. I felt that our kids gave a good fight and went down swinging which is all I can ask of them. Seneca was a good win for us as well. They have some tough kids in the line up and to put 50+ on them was a good accomplishment...one that I didn't see coming. I am excited about a good night of practice and then on to Senior Night. We will be honoring 4 senior wrestlers and a senior manager. I am very proud of them. Nick Leibundguth and Ryan Smith have wrestled for me for the full 4 years while Jose Aguilar and Jose Montiel came out just this year. They have been fun to coach and I wish I was successful in recruiting them 3 years ago. Rachel has put up with me for the full 4 years as well and will be missed. It's hard to make me look good, and she does a pretty good job of it. I hope we can send off the seniors right with a couple of good wins. The ceremony will start at 5:45 and wrestling starts at 6:00pm.

100th Posting

This blogging thing sure has been fun. This is the 100th post and we have had over 3400 posts to date. That's not to bad if you ask me. I've enjoyed writing about the kids success and I hope to add plenty move of them over the next few weeks. This is our last week of duals and I'm excited to get to the state series. We are sitting at 16-1, a record that I thought was a few years away, but the group of kids I have are special and believed from day one that they could accomplish great things which they have. There is still work to be done. We remind them every day that the hardest part of the season has yet to come. I hope that we have them ready for the next phase.
Tonight we wrestle the best in the state at class A...Wilmington. The have built a great program over the years. I am still trying to figure out how they do it. This year they have 26 freshmen alone and right around 50 total in their program. Outstanding. I believe a good part of their success is the relationship with they have with the football program. If you look at their rosters they are filled with football standouts and vise versa. Freshmen are told that they need to wrestle or play basketball, and that there is nothing else. They build athletes and it has proven to work. We will give them a run tonight and I know that my kids will give them everything they have. I look forward to the contest. It will show were we need to be. Reaper Wrestling...still the hottest team in Plano.

Back to Work

Today we go back to work. We have a lot to work on and I hope that our guys are going to be ready to do what is necessary to get better. I'm pretty sure that they are. I just hope that they do not allow the disappointment of last night get to them. No one is more disappointed than I, but we have to move on and get ready for our next duals. We have 4 more at home next week. Seneca and Wilmington come to town on Tuesday to wrap up our I-8 schedule and then for Senior Night on Thursday, we will face Mooseheart and ACC. After we finish up the dual season there is still JV Conference, Varsity Conference and the Oregon F/S tournament before we start the State series the first week of February. I"m looking forward to getting back on the mat today and getting the team ready at 3:00pm today.

History in the Making????

Tonight we attempt to do something that hasn't been done in 25 years...beat Sandwich. The rivalry has been going on for over 40 years and the fact that for over half of those years they have kept us out of the win column is a big source of motivation to get a win tonight. We have a solid team with great group of kids. We will need to wrestle the best we have to date and wrestle fundamentally sound, but if we do, I think we will have a great chance to make some history. Thank you all for the kind words I continue to receive. It is great to see that Plano is starting to remember that we are first and foremost a Wrestling town.

Still Undefeated!!

My guys have shocked me again. Times were tough and they came together as the family and team that they are and overcame some pretty tough adversity to defeat Manteno and Peotone. I am proud of them and blessed that I have such a great group of young men to coach. Details tomorrow...I'm spent.

3rd Place finish for the Reapers at Prairie Central Hawk Classic

Ten Reaper Wrestlers placed to earn a 3rd place finish at Saturday's Prairie Central Hawk Classic. The kids wrestled extremely well and I couldn't be prouder of them. Plano finished with 140.5 points behind Champaign Centennial (AA) and LeRoy (Ranked 6th in state) and finished ahead of Argenta -Oreana who scored 135.0 points. We were only able to take 11 guys down total to the tournament so to place 10 of them was an outstanding accomplishment for our team. Shaun Wollenweber was our lone champion and had one heck of a tournament winning his final match by tech fall. Abel Gonzalez wrestled the best he has all year and avenged a previous loss to the Seneca 112 pounder with a final score of 13-0 in the 3rd place match. Koty Bennet fell a little short in the 5th place match, but wrestled solid all day. His best match was against another Seneca wrestler in Gary Wantroba. Ivan Lopez also fell a bit short in the 5th place match at 130 but pinned the #1 seed (Zack Wheeler, Seneca) just to get to the final round. Tyler Hausler wrestled well but lost his two matches to the eventual runner up and 5th place winners. Nick Leibundguth had another strong tournament placeing 6th  win wins over Hutson from El Paso, Keeton from Richwoods and Bauer from Dwight. Wes Brown ended up on the wrong end of the 3rd place match but wrestled extremely well all day. He was beat by the eventual champions from Hoopston and LeCrone from unity in a 4-3 last second dog fight. Kelby Gann also had a good tournament placing 4th and going 2-2 on the day. Jonathan Pickett placed in his first varsity tournament and continues to get better with every match. Ryno Smith place 5th after loosing to conference foe Bolte from Dwight. And finally Trent Bowers place in his first varsity tournament as well finishing 2-2 on the day. It was a great day and a lot of fun to get so many of our guys some great success.

13 in a Row...I really like the sound of that.

Reapers get another win tonight as they defeated the Hawks of Oregon. It was a good test for our kids. They are a perennial program and it was good to get a win against them. We had two starters out of the line up but we filled in and took it to the Hawks. Our guys are getting better every week and I am so proud of them, and that includes the JV team as well. Those guys are in part what makes the varsity wrestle as good as they do. Without a good practice partner it is hard to improve. One day to prepare and then we are heading to Prairie Central. We have a bunch of kids in the top 4 seeds down there and I hope it is a very good tournament for us. There is some very good competition so we will have to wrestle our A game for sure. It looks like Illinois Best Weekly has us ranked at #14 as a team. Pretty excited about that. I hope we can climb a little higher over then next two weeks. St. Bede was a no show, so I going to look for someone else to fill in maybe the week before varsity conference. We'll see what I can come up with. Results are posted below. Thanks to all those that continually support us and check up on how we are doing.

Gut Check Time

We are gonna have to do a gut check tonight to continue our streak. Two of are starters are out with illness but luckily we have some backups that are very capable. It is nice having some depth at these weights and I'm confident that we can get it done.

Hottest team in Plano...12-0!!!

I told the kids that if I could do a back flip, I would be doing them all over that gym after we beat up on Reed Custer. I can't tell you how good of a feeling that was. It's not secret that there is no love for that team and vise versa. I am glad that we came away with two more wins, but the second against Dwight was bitter sweet. Winning only 2 out of the 5 total matches was not a great way to end the night. We won because of forfeits and I take it as a win, but I still feel we should have wrestled a bit better. Tomorrow we will hit the room hard and prepare for Oregon and St. Bede. I have no idea what to expect with those two teams so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Granby School of Wrestling Technique Series #27

Steve Mocco Clinic @ UPenn 4

Good Practice

Still missing a few bodies today but most of the guys were in attendance for a good practice today. Coach Villarreal lead them in a ton of different situations for 30 second live goes. The guys are starting to process things a bit faster. If we can get a few more to buy into the necessity of drilling, they will be able to react that much quicker. There is a big learning curve for my young guys but they are picking it up pretty quickly and adjusting to the speed of high school wrestling. Having a line up composed of 8 underclassmen will pay off huge dividends in the near future. The nicest thing though is that it should pay off huge dividends this year as well. 10-0 and hopefully tomorrow we'll add 2 more to the win column. Wrestling starts at 5:30pm at Coal City when we wrestle Reed Custer and Dwight. Come on out...it's not to far of a drive to see the best team in Plano.

Results from Lincoln

I'm sorry that I forgot to post these. We ended up taking 9th out of 24 teams. We were by far the smallest school there, so I consider our finish a pretty good success. We went 1-4 in the final round with our 5 finalists which I would be lying  if I said I wasn't a bit disappointed, but it was the 3rd or 4th match of the day for some of those kids and they were not used to it I guess. We need to figure out how to wrestle better on day 2 of a tournament.
Heres how we finished.

103 Wollenweber 6th
119 Villarreal 5th
140 Tomac 2nd
145 Leibundguth 8th
215 Smith 6th

Prairie Central Hawk Classic will be our next tournament on the 8th of January.

Good practice for those that were there.

Only 10 guys at practice today. Can't say that I'm not a little disappointed. I know it's New Years but, there will be 60-80 more new years days for my guys, but having the opportunity to win 20+ duals wont come nearly as often. The guys that did show up worked hard for a good hour and a half. They got in a good sweat and drilled well. Coach Villarreal went a full match today with Travis including overtimes...thought we were going to have to call 911. He's still got it though. Kelby is picking things up faster every practice and starting to make some good decisions. Peruski has been a very pleasant surprise and addition to the team. He is a sponge and is improving every day. Losic has also been a pleasant surprise this year. If we can get past the asthma he will be pretty darn good. He is a natural athlete. Abel and Shaun are fun to watch in the room. I never thought I'd say that about a 103 and 112 pounder but I like their styles and they move so darn fast. Jose had a good tournament at Lincoln and continues to refine his game. If we can figure out a way to get him flexible...watch out! Ryan is finally starting to open up his game and it is paying off. I know he wasn't exactly happy with his performance at the Lincoln tourny, but he showed some good things and we know of a few more to work on. Travis is wrestling well. He needs some fine tuning but wrestling with Coach Villarreal will force him to wrestle fundamentally sound and improve his skills. Cesar and Nathan are great additions this year as well. Both are super nice kids and work hard. They are like Zach in that they are always looking to learn and  improve. I love coaching kids like that. We will be back on the mats on Monday morning at 8 to prepare for Reed Custer and Dwight. Most of you know my feelings on Reed Custer, so I hope you are as focused as I am on beating their tails. Have a good rest of the weekend and heal up. Time to go to work on Monday.
