Two Practices Left

We open at home on Wednesday the 1st of December and I can't wait to get this show started. It's been a good 3 weeks of intense training and the boys are ready to let loose. We will have a full line up for the first time in a very long time. That is of course if every makes weight. I am a bit concerned that some of our guys think that weight cutting only occurs in the room. This is not the case. I've never been a huge believer in cutting a drastic amount of weight, but if you are with in 2-3 lbs of a lower weight class and have 10-15% body fat, it would be in the wrestlers and teams best interest in more times than not to drop the weight. Eating right is the biggest contributor to proper weight loss. Smaller portions and a bit of sacrifice with pop and the sweats will make a huge difference. I am hoping that we can get our guys to buy into that truth.
Come out and support us on Wednesday. The guys and I are excited for the product we hope to put out there this year. This Saturday we are traveling to near by Plainfield South to take on a big 3A team that I think we will compete with very well. Already spoke with their coach who says that they will not have a full lineup. Looking forward to a good first week of wrestling before the Classic next weekend. Thanks to those that have and continue to support the sport that put Plano on the map.

Week from Wednesday

Short but busy week. We need to get weight certified, pass out uniforms, get team pictures and have wrestle offs. Basic offensive package is installed but we still have some fine tuning to do. Kids are in good spirits still and continuing to work hard. They set the bar high the first week so I am holding them to that standard. December 1, we take on Mendota and Elgin St. Edwards. Should be a good time. I am looking forward to see what we can do with a full line up.

9 Practices Left

Only 9 practices remain before our first meet. We still have a lot to cover but I think that we will be ready. We will conduct our weight certification tests on Monday and Tuesday so that the boys can have a good Thanksgiving. We had a bit of a lighter practice yesterday so that kids could get home and get some homework done. It seems that grade issues are trying to make their way back into the program. I am hoping to cut them off before they become a serious issue.

Turks - Drill

Hard Core Club

I was very impressed that at the very end of doubles, a wrestler came up to me and stated that he wanted to continue to have morning practices 2-3 times a week. Little Jose took a huge jump in leadership when he guaranteed that he would have guys commited to coming in the morning for some extra work. I am please to say that so far he has kept his word and came in on Monday and Wednesday with 5 other young men who are all dedicated to make our program better. That is just one more reason to be excited for this year.
************************************************************************************ In other news we have some kids that are getting pretty sick. We  need to take care of ourselves in this time of increased workouts and continued fluctuation in our crazy Illinois weather. Washing your hands constantly and taking a shower after practice is a must. Leaving practice with a coat on is also essential. Increase your vitamin C intake and get plenty of rest. Fruits and veggies should be eaten with every meal. Stay healthy!!!

Breakfast and Frisbee

Since I took over this program we have been running double practices for the first week. At the end of the week as a tradition we play and little game of ultimate Frisbee to break up the monotony of our reqular practices. This year we started a new tradition of have a team breakfast after the game to give a bit of reward to the guys for making it through such a tough week. One more practice tonight and a bit of a shorter one tomorrow morning and "Hell Week" comes to an end. Kids have worked very hard and I can't say it enough on how good of a group of kids they are.

Nutrition tip...EAT BREAKFAST every day. Keep that metabolism going through out the day. You need fuel to run a car, you need calories to run your body.

Mat Reapers Give Back

The Reaper Wrestlers took a little time off from training this morning to give back to PHS by picking up over 15 bags worth of trash from the school grounds. It is important that our wrestlers not only take pride in the wrestling program but in their school as well. Doing a bit of community service builds character which is always a goal of our program. We strive to make sure that our boys are better men after they leave the program. I think we took a step in the right direction with this act.

Cael Sanderson Wrestling Technique

Jake Herbert Wrestling Technique - Leg Finishes

Hump day

There is light at the end of the tunnel. We are half way done with Hell Week. Had a great practice last night. These kids work hard and I am thankful for that. This morning we had a bit of a hick-up trying to do something new in the weight room, but we'll make up for it this evening. We are getting a few more kids trickling in that are deciding to be a part of something positive and good so that is good as well. Tonight we will go over some more finishes from the single leg and high crotch and then throw in some snap downs and the front head series.

ASU Insane Plate Workout | Arizona State Hell Week on Flowrestling

ASU Insane Plate Workout | Arizona State Hell Week on Flowrestling

4 Corners

Another good morning practice. We had 4 stations each having its own set of exercises. One station was doing a plate work out, another worked with medicine balls, the third was a jump rope station and the final station was doing things like push ups, sit ups and mountain climbers. The boys worked hard and got in a good sweat. I can't say it enough on how excited I am for this group of young men. They will all contribute to the success of our program. They are all a necessary part of our team. I'm hoping to recruit a few more in the hallways to get our numbers up around 35-38. That will give us a little more depth and create a some more competition at certain weights.

Great First Day!!

We had a wonderful first day. The excitement and enthusiasm gave me goose bumps. I am very pleased with the group of kids that have come out. The athleticism already has floored me. I look forward to watching them grow through out the season. So far it does not look like they are afraid of hard work. I hope this trend continues.
In terms of leadership, I feel that there are two kids that stand out in my mind at this point and I am hoping that at least two more will emerge. Leadership is a funny thing. There are multiple styles and ways to lead but I am looking for someone that will not only be vocal and lead by example but will also be positive and encouraging. I am looking for someone that will not only lead in the wrestling room, but also in the classroom and community. Leadership is not a sometime thing, it's an all the time thing. Who will step up? I look forward to finding out. Get rest gentlemen. Ice those sore legs, drink some fluids, eat a good carb filled meal and get the homework done. Day 2 is a few short hours away.

"Both Feet in the Circle"

Clinic

Coach Kampf, Coach Summers and I went to Montini High School to a coaches clinic ran by Izzy Martinez. He sure knows his stuff. We learned a lot and have it all on video. I will try and post some highlights one here, but if you are interested in a copy of the entire video, let me know and I'll burn a copy. Can't wait till this afternoon.

First AM Practice Under Our Belts

30 young men showed up this morning ready to work and start a new Reaper Wrestling season. I was very impressed with their attitudes and work ethic already. There were a couple of kids that did not show who I am expecting to come out tonight. Overall I am happy so far and look forward to this afternoons practice. I believe very strongly that this is a special group of kids who will help take this program to another level. Go Reapers!

Clinic tomorrow...practice on Monday.

Some of the coaches and I are going to a coaching clinic tomorrow at Montini high school. Should be fun. Always good to try and learn new techniques. I think back to my first year and how green I was. Coach Z at Airfield gave me a solid block of wrestling Passion but I was a bit lack in the technique part of the sport. I've been fortunate to be able to whitness some great clinicians and coach along some very knowledgeable coaches. There will always be room for improvement, but I think we have the program on the right track. I can't wait till Monday!

First practice is Monday the 8th at 6:15am. I look forward to the beginning of a great new season. Come ready to work men.

Two good technique video's.

Here are two good video's on the "high crotch". The first is a high crotch to a dump. Very effective and low risk. The second is bit of a risky counter to the "high crotch". It is very nice for freestyle but can be useful in folkstyle as well. Enjoy.
