Off Season

Hello Family,
I know that the season just ended but I also know that if we want to reach our team and personal goals, we will have to work very hard this off season. Starting today, we will have open mats on Wednesday's and Friday's to go over freestyle and greco wrestling. These two styles will greatly benefit your high school wrestling. The mat time will also prepare you for the upcoming off season schedule. Again, I am hoping that you will commit to at least 5 off season tournaments. Our open mat sessions will not be as intense as our regular practices and will end at 4:00pm.
On Monday, Tuesdays and Thursdays there will be after school lifting with Mr. Heller. I will be there as much as I can for that time as well.
We need to have "Both Feet In the Circle" in order for us to achieve our goals, and that means we need to put in the work during the off season.

I am in the process of finalizing a date for our banquet. It will be held at Plano Christian Church this year and will be catered. I thought it might be nice to celebrate such an outstanding season with a little extra flair.

Travis earns All-State Honors and Places 4th

I apologize for the delay, but yesterday I turned off my phone and computer to spend the entire day with the family. We had a successful state tournament. Wes went 1-2 on the weekend and was 2 points away from placing. He had a great tournament and wrestled very well. I expect outstanding things over the next 3 years from Wes. Travis is the latest Reaper Wrestler to earn All-State Honors placing 4th at 140#. Travis wrestled outstandingly all weekend and although I know he felt short of his goal, I think that he should be proud of his season, tournament and career as a Reaper Wrestler, I know I am proud of him.

The season is officially over but the quest to win our first team regional is continuing. Fresh/Soph state is this weekend and any freshmen/sophomore who didn't qualify for the varsity state tournament is eligible to participate. There will be off season tournaments just about every weekend from here on out and we will of course attend a team camp again. We had a wonderful season, but still fell short of our team goals of winning a regional. We can't be satisfied with our accomplishments, we need to continue to work hard to reach our ultimate goal of bringing a big trophy home from the team dual state. Off season wrestling and lifting are two necessities to achieve this goal. I am challenging our guys to participate in a minimum of 5 off season tournaments and attend the Luther Team camp in July. If each of our guys can commit to this, it will mean an additional 20-30 matches of experience that will greatly benefit them for next year. I  hope that you are all up the the challenge.

Details on the banquet will be coming soon.

Checked in and Ready to GO!!

Hotel is awesome. Huge upgrade from last year or any year we've been here for that matter. Kids are resting for a while and Coach Jose and myself are enjoying a little luxury...and some home made chocolate chip cookies. We are heading to assembly hall for a work out here in about 20 minutes. We'll shower up and grab a bit afterwords before we head out to see U of I wrestle Indiana tonight. Kids seem focused and excited. I know I am.

State Bound

This will be my 6th consecutive trip down to Assembly Hall with competing wrestlers. It never gets old. For a guy that never had the opportunity to wrestle at the state meet, coaching at it has been a dream come true. The fact that I've had two finalists and that they turned into champions is even more of a dream come true. I have the pleasure and was fortunate to be a part of some pretty cool things as an athlete or coach, but nothing compares to walking in that grand march and then having a guy that you've invested so much time and energy into jump into your arms victorious after an all out war on the mat. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it. Its been a long road for Travis and I with our fair share of bumps along the way, but I love the kid and I know that he is ready to take that next step. I've told anyone who will listen, the kid is wrestling at a completely different level than anyone he's faced. 3 more matches Travis and I get to squeeze the heck out of you! Wes, I hope you use the fact that you are not being talked about and are being looked over as fuel. You are as talented of an athlete as I've had in the program. You get better every day and your future is extremely bright. My arms are waiting for you too!! I can't wait to get down there and get this thing going.

Hotel Issues

So for the second time in my 7 year tenure as head coach, our hotel that we booked rooms with for state has gone out of business. We have found replacement rooms, but at a bit of a cost so we will be returning Saturday night after the tournament is over. Looks like we will be leaving late morning on Thursday. As tradition we will stop in Gibson City for lunch and then check in tot he hotel before our practice at Assembly Hall in the afternoon. Wrestling starts at 11:00am I believe on Friday.

Assembly Hall

We got two down today.
Travis Tomac at 140#
Wes Brown at 152#
Along with those two qualifiers we have 3 alternates.
Shaun Wollenweber 103#
Jose Villarreal 119#
Trent Bowers 285#

I would have gotten a few more out, but I feel that we wrestled well all weekend and the kids gave me everything they had. I'm so very proud of them and couldn't ask for a better group of young men to be around.

It's Time!

It's time to let it all on the line.
It's time to leave everything you have on the mat.
It's time to cash in on all the hard work you've put in over the last 3 months.
It's time to send the other guy home while you get your hand raised.
It's time to be proud of your accomplishments and the sacrifices you've made.
It's time to use all of the technique you've learned and some that you didn't know you knew.
It's time to have a whole lot of fun.
It's time to wrestle your best.

Good luck tomorrow gentlemen. I love you guys and am so very proud of what we have done this year. Tomorrow it's all about you. Enjoy the moment and leave no regrets in your heart. Give me everything you have and nothing less and regardless of the outcome, I will be proud of you.

Pictures from Saturday

Sectionals

Our boys had a good showing at Regionals on Saturday. Obviously I would have liked to get more through and win the dog gone tournament, but we were up against some very tough competition and to get 9 out was an accomplishment in my opinion. I am proud of how we wrestled and conducted ourselves throughout the day. I felt that the reffing was a bit suspect but I have seen worse. The tournament was run well although I thought we'd get out of there a little sooner than we did. We saw some good matches. Travis wrestled very well in his two matches. I don't think Oleson knows what to do with him. He is wrestling at a completely different level. Ryno had great 3rd place match. He grinded out a good win that he should be proud of. I felt that Jose wrestled tough against Rosenberg but still has some work to do in order to beat him. We've got 4 days to get that work in which should be enough. Trent went toe to toe with a giant of a young man and almost came out on top. A few things to clean up and I think it's a different outcome. Hopefully we get the chance on Saturday. Koty had a decent tournament as well. He decided to make things a little more difficult for himself by loosing in the first round, but got  his head right and won his next two. It can be hard to rebound from a loss like that and he found a way to do it. Wes had a good tournament, again facing 2 ranked kids. He wrestled outstandingly against the Wilmington kid and if he could of stayed out of a 5 point move, he would have beat the Lisle kid as well. Both were quality opponents and will have to be delt with if he wants to make it down to Assembly hall.
All in All it was a good tournament for us. I tip my hat to Wilmington, they are quality. It's frustrating that the best team we've had during my tenure has to see the best team in the state for the first time in regional competition, but it motivates me to get this program better. Wilmington has kids just like ours, and has coaches just like ours. The only difference that I really see is that they are a bit stronger, and more disciplined in their technique. They are tough kids as well and like to get into a fight. My guys are young but if I've learned anything about them this is its been that they are not afraid to fight either. We are not there yet, but we are closer than we've ever been. Come out and support the boys this weekend. Sectional wrestling starts on Friday at 5:30pm and continues Saturday at 9:00am. Come out and see Shaun, Jose, Koty, Travis, Wes, Kelby, Pickett, Ryno, and Trent do their best to make it down to Assembly hall.

Reapers place 2nd at Regionals

Plano sends 9 wrestlers to sectionals next weekend. Good showing by our boys.

Regionals at Reed Custer

Today starts the state series. This is where it starts to get fun...and a bit nerve racking. At regionals more so than any other time during the season, every point counts. You have to wrestle sharp and clean, be aggressive but protect yourself at the same time. It's a time to finish matches, to wrestle all 6 minutes and be ready to go that extra 2 and a 1/2 if need be. It's a time where if you loose you could be done for the season. My guys are ready. They look forward to the challenge and fully expect to do well. They have been prepared and put in the work to succeed. This group is special and I can't wait till 9:30am today.

Practice Today at 3:00pm

We are allowed to have practice today at 3:00pm. The IHSA is giving everyone an extra pound allowance in because of how many schools had to shut down and prohibited practice.
